Pilates and Somatics

The mind is like the wind and the body like the sand: if you want to know how the wind is blowing, you can look at the sand. –Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Certified through Polestar Pilates, Laura teaches both semi-privates, privates and group classes.  Her teaching is deeply influenced by her study of somatics, Body-Mind Centering, anatomy, modern dance and contact improvisation.  For her, movement and Pilates are not about an end goal, they are about the continual process of embodiment–coming more fully into the body while withholding judgement.  She has worked with a variety of populations, from those rehabbing injuries, to dancers, climbers and those seeking a new challenge to their fitness or movement routine.  She has completed continuing education courses in Advanced Spine, Body-Mind Centering, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique and a Pilates rehabilitation intensive with Lizz Roman.

TESTIMONIALS:

“Laura Blakely is more than a Pilates teacher–she’s a healer.  She has an intimate knowledge of the body and its injuries, and her cues are perfect for helping you to make the most subtle changes that make all the difference, ensuring that you start doing everything (not just Pilates) in the proper alignment.  I’d recommend her to anyone looking to tone, slim, heal and strengthen.”  — Heather S.

Laura is simply the best technician of anyone I have ever worked with.  She truly knos the body and how it works.  She helped me recover from a neck injury with the Pilates technique.  I trusted her completely.  I am stronger, more flexible and hae not had any further neck issues.  She knows what she’s doing and gets results with a gentle style.  i would recommend her to anyone.”  –Andrea P.
